There’s no better way to celebrate winning a major wine award then by inviting dozens of friends and family to enjoy some wine and good food.

That’s exactly what happened last Friday afternoon at Bordertown Vineyards & Estate Winery in Osoyoos as Mohan Gill and his large family were honoured with the Lieutenant Governor’s Award of Excellence in British Columbia Wines for its 2013 Living Desert Red.

This was one of 14 awards B.C.’s Lieutenant Governor Judith Guichon presented over three days to winery owners in Kelowna, Summerland, Penticton, Oliver and Osoyoos.

Members of the Government House Foundation, which administers the annual Lieutenant Governor’s wine awards in British Columbia, joined Guichon on her tour of the Okanagan Valley last week.

Guichon praised Mohan Gill and his family for producing award-winning wine even before the current winery and tasting room was built and opened to the public in May of 2015.

A large crowd of close to 150 people were in attendance for Friday’s awards ceremony.

“Congratulations Mohan to you and all of your family,” she said. “Here are Bordertown Winery you have reached certain greatness. I can see there will be more of these kinds of awards for you in the future.

“Congratulations on all of your success.”

This year’s awards continue to prove that wineries across the Okanagan Valley are continuing to produce world-class wine, said Guichon.

It takes a tremendous amount of work for any winery to produce award-winning wine and Gill and his family are living proof that hard work pays off, said Guichon.

Jason Parke, a veteran winemaker who was hired by the Gill family to produce the 2013 Living Desert Red, said he was very proud to work for a family that works so hard to produce great wine.

“Hopefully there will be many more awards like this to come in this family,” he said. “Congratulations to you Mohan and your whole team on winning this major award.”

Joe Gardner, a member of the Government House Foundation, said it’s always a great privilege for members of the foundation to visit the Okanagan Valley and hand out awards to some of the best wineries in the country.

Gardner praised all of the winners of this year’s awards and acknowledged it takes a great deal of hard work to produce quality wine that is recognized at this level.

Gill thanked everyone who was in attendance for their support of his family’s winery.

“We’re very excited to share our dream with you,” he said.

Bordertown Vineyards and Estate Winery own a 35-acre vineyard that has been producing craft wine grapes for top wineries across the Okanagan Valley for several years.

Mohan, his wife Charanjit, brother Gurmit, sister Barjit and father Narjan were all on hand for Friday’s ceremony.

Since arriving in Canada back in 1997, Mohan Gill and his family have built a solid reputation as fruit and grape growers, supplying some of the South Okanagan’s best fruit to a select few wineries and winemakers.

Being able to open Bordertown was a dream come true, said Gill.

Bordertown Vineyards & Estate Winery is located on the edge of town limits in Osoyoos on Hwy. 97, adjacent to the Shell gas station property.
